A triad of blessings…

1. Kim Rosen gave an inspiring TED talk that you must see if you haven’t already!

Mind, body, spirit!

Past, present, future!

The three little pigs!

Father, Son, Holy spirit!

2. I’m tickled pink by the brave team of YOKE MAGAZINE for stepping into a highly saturated arena of media superficiality and producing a product of intense integrity aligning itself to the very purpose of yoga being ‘a union of consciousness’.  They are an independent magazine which does not support advertising. Meaning: No ego, no peddling of the unattainable and above all no BULLSHIT!!! Om Shanti!

3. Viparita Karani…. is one yoga pose that will save your life. it is a stunning asana that can swiftly alter a state of mind. My only caution is women should not do it during their cycle. It literally means, doing an inverted pose. The ideal is to use a wall but if that’s not available to you then either use the side of your bed or the couch or a chair are all very effective. Sit to the side of your prop, with your shoulder right up against the wall/bed/chair. Lower your torso to the floor while simultaneously swinging your legs upward. If you’re using a chair just allow your knees to bend and your feet to rest on the chair. What may happen during your transition is that your back may move away from the wall… so here’s what you do to get it closer to your prop. Bend your knees and flatten your feet to the wall. Lift your back and walk your shoulders inward towards the wall, then slowly lower yourself down and hopefully you’ll be closer to the wall if not touching it. With a chair you can pull it closer to you. If when you’re there your back starts to ache trying placing a firm pillow or rolled towel under your lower back, right up against the wall. Then close your eyes and enjoy the bliss of letting go!!!! It is rejuvenating, for the sheer reason that the circulation of blood is being assisted and your system can take a short break as the nectar of your being pools towards the heart effortlessly. I like to stay for 30 minutes. Your arms can either be stretched behind you or they can rest on your belly giving you an opportunity to focus on the flow of the breath. Trust me, this one is a must!! Please let me know how it made you feel…

I confess, I am a collector of words. Not just the everyday words, but the ones that seem to manifest from a pause in thought and the drawing in of a longer than usual breath. In my palm size book I have collected words from known and unknown souls that share a passion for linguistic dance. Small snippets of insights caressing my mind away from chaos, swirling whirlpools in my being to cherish beauty in all things.

Each have expanded my horizon to see beyond my peripheral vision and into that place that only the radical of thinkers would dare to couple such images together. Like this one…. a hindu proverb “The poet can reach where the sun cannot”. It’s the words that I will always remember long beyond the action. The words will always reach into me and eloquently bring to life a stillness. That very stillness that I return to, during and after each yoga practice.

Some people say they can live on air alone and for me I truly believe that words are my nourishment. While most kids were deep into fairy tales, I instead was weaving a tapestry of new and uncharted adjectives, skimming the dictionary like a scavenger in search of MORE. There is always something more to reach…

I don’t often talk about my yoga practice, not even with my students or to colleagues really. It’s very personal and honestly it’s hard to put into words what goes on…  It’s not the jumping around and the contortionist moves that keeps me keen. Today in the silence of my practice, the words that surfaced painted another landscape of understanding. One pose at a time, I sculpt a place in me that beautifully holds my essence. I am suspended from attachment to either bliss or torment. As I move my body attuned to the rhythm of my breath, I seek out that pause that naturally occurs between the paths of inhale and exhale. It’s here that I experience my most treasured gift of all. Emptiness! That emptiness is like an exquisite freedom. Perhaps like an iceberg dislodged from the land… just floating, buoyant and an island in itself.

‘Oh beloved, take away what I want,
take away what I do,
take away what I need,
take away everything
that takes me from you’ Rumi

ahhh yoga! the two core principles of yoga as outlined in the Yoga Sutras: Abhyasa and Vairagya!
Abhyasa – devoted practice
Vairagya- detachment from anything that takes us away from Remembering the self.

From Bent to me….

Just a brief note to say HELLO…

I started off as BentPeople and perhaps it was my name that lured you to my site. With a whiff of change in the air, I’ve made the grown up decision to take ownership of who I am and change the name of my site to (me) Adriana Cortazzo. My site has two purposes: one is to keep new and current students informed of my teaching schedule and secondly, to share some fun, creative and liberating rants with a pinch or a dollop of yoga sacredness. I am inspired by the wisdom and words of the stunning Kim Rosen when she says “dare to allow the rhythm of your heart beat and your breath into the words you use…” I do wear my heart on my sleeves and hopefully into the very veins of my being. Although you are already part of my online tribe I reopen my door to you and greet you whole heartedly to this place I call me. Bless you!

Hand-some beast!

Guido Daniele is an italian born artist with a panache for painting animals on hands; otherwise known as ‘Handimals’. I want to take a moment to consider the model that sits perfectly still for up to 10 hours at a time while Guido brings forth the beast in the hand. When the model goes off to work that morning does he/she bid the household good-bye with a ‘I’m off to my handjob’… Honestly, though Guido’s handiwork is hands down brilliant… even if at times his ideas can be a handful. OK, I’M STOPPING… BENT and BRILLIANT!

The passion, the love and the spirit!

legPASSION: I live right on the beach and in front of my place is a tap. It’s mostly used for feet washing or dog drinking. On this one day, I see a woman dressed in her religion covered from head to toe and she is passionately washing something at that tap. The water has been running longer than usual and being conscious of water wastage, it starts to pull my attention. I walk from the lounge to the kitchen and back and I’m starting to wonder what is needing such maticulous cleaning. With my curiousty perked I edge up to the window and take a closer look. Her husband is waiting in the car parked along side her and the kids are patiently calm in the back seat. But what is she washing? Never in a million years would I have ever guessed it was her husbands artificial prosthetic leg. She would hold the leg up as though inspecting a precious jewel, making sure that every last grain of sand was washed away and ready for her beloved to wear again. I thought about the agony this family had endured when her husband had his leg amputated and the hope this prosthetic leg had restored into their family structure. I went from being annoyed about the water wastage to being struck by an unending stream of love and devotion.

the mans beachLOVE: On another day I see a gentleman aged somewhere between old and ancient, shuffling along the beach. Just so you don’t get confused, this isn’t on my beach but one that is just around the corner and not one that I usually do a morning walk on. We cross paths and exchange our morning salutes and I can tell that this man is astute and gentle. After my third day of walking on this beach, I see the man each day and his routine is the same each time. His rhythm is slow and hypnotic as he elegantly sweeps the sand of unclaimed rubbish. His neighbourly gesture surpasses the mere act of keeping the beach clean. This man is completely devoted to this beach, his beach and he combs the sand with the grace of grooming a loved one. After he’s completed his walk, he starts a very simple yoga regime. His age restricts his moves from being too deep, but move he does. After offering a modified Surya Namaskara he then proceeds to the ocean for the completion of his ritual, but not before completely disrobing and entering the water naked. Now, when I first saw this I was completely gob-smacked as the Brits would say, and never would I have guessed he would do that. But that’s what I love about life, you just never know what’s coming. It’s really an exquiste experience to feel the water gently lap up against the whole of our body. This man was totally in love with his beach and his nakedness was his final merging with his beloved. There was no partner in sight, only his beach of unending love that he faithfully devotes himself to everyday. Beautiful sight!

King_Brown_SnakeMY SPIRIT: In one day, I see many snakes. I have a very quiet obsession about them. Now before you go all Jungian on me, or is that Freud, my libido is doing just fine. They are in my dreams mostly, either at night or just when I’m day dreaming. I imagine that one is sitting right along side me just chewing the fat and pondering life. In Bali one year, I met the very spirited Bec that was soon to become my BF on that trip. She is a turbo charged, larger than life bright spark and wherever she went I pretty much followed. So when she mentioned going to see a healer there was no question that I was going too. After our hour long trip further into the forrest we finally arrived at the healers abode; one crematorium! Interesting! He poked his bony fingers all over me and then piped up in broken english that my snakes where running loose… WHATDA! His aim was to align them to my spirit. Which I think he ABSOLUTELY did. I really feel like I’m a snake. It all started years ago when I did a vision quest. It was my third day into the solo bit and I started to see snakes. Of course I was freaked out, but I figured that after three days of not eating and hanging out with only me in the middle of the Flinders rangers, that maybe my mind was getting desperate for entertainment. Where they real or not? I couldn’t even tell anymore. But since that intensely profound trip I see them everywhere. I’m even contemplating getting a tattoo of one, as my ode to it’s spirit. A friend of mine told me that he had a premonition that when he was to meditate at a particular tree out the back of his house he would be visited by snake spirit. So this one day he sat at his tree and he settled into his medative state and before long he was indeed visited by a snake.. not a spirit, but a real one. The snake moved across his legs, stayed for a bit and then disappeared into the forrest. My friend didn’t feel fear, if anything a oneness with the simplicity of that moment. A tree, a man, a snake… that’s all. It was indeed a beautiful meditation.

What is snake energy:

Wisdom, Healing, Initiation

The symbol of eternity

This a powerful totem — it is
the symbol of transformation and healing.
The Snake is wisdom expressed through healing.

It is a protector and guardian totem,
along with its sister totems, the Dragon and the Serpent.

If a snake totem has come into your life, your creative forces are awakening.
Your intuition will sharpen and be more accurate.

Snake energy is the energy of wholeness, cosmic consciousness, and
the ability to experience anything willingly and without resistance.
It is the knowledge that all things are equal in creation.

It also signals a transition in your life.
New opportunities and/or changes.

Snake is fire medicine, the medicine of transmutation.
On a material level, it is vitality; on an emotional level, it is ambition and dreams;
on a mental level, it is intellect and power; on a spiritual level (the highest level),
it is wisdom, understanding and wholeness.

Snake magic is heavy magic.
Become the Magician and transmute the energy and accept the power of the fire.

This is what I see… and you, what do you see?

Two in One

Beautiful friend, your gracious support has deeply touched me. I am humbled by your open heart and your creative spirit. This is a big place and I am exhilarated by the vastness of it’s reach.

Christmas Cheers
Japan… For many Japanese, the traditional Christmas dinner consists of Kentucky Fried Chicken. So popular and well-marketed is the concept that most KFC restaurants accept reservations on Christmas day.

May we remember that we are all children of the earth; kindred spirits, brothers and sisters, members of the great family of love. May our hearts and minds be joined as one; unified within, so without.

Norway… Norwegian legend has it that hoards of witches and evil spirits come out on Christmas Eve searching for brooms to ride on. Thus, to this day, Norwegian women traditionally hide their brooms, mops and brushes from sight on Christmas Eve, while men sometimes fire a shotgun outside the house to scare the witches away.

May we choose love over fear; unity and harmony over separation and discord. May we have the strength to claim our authentic power; standing true in word, action and deed, and with firm resolve be the change we wish to see in the world.

Czech Republic… On Christmas Eve, unmarried Czech women carry out an annual tradition to predict their relationship status for the forthcoming year. Standing with their backs to a door, they toss one of their shoes over their shoulder. If, when it lands, the toe faces the door, the thrower will marry within the year but if the heel faces the door, they will remain unmarried for another year.

May we have courage to look for the blessing in every moment, and the audacity to celebrate it! May we breathe prayers of thanks into each moment, and with reverence honour the gift this life brings… this is my prayer,,, it is so, and so it is!

Australia… On Christmas Eve, baby kangaroos gather in the towns centre prepareing to pull Santa’s sleigh… ok, ok, ok… that ones a myth. Mostly it’s beach, bathers and more beach,,, with an array of sumptuous food in-between, all wrapped up in an abundance of delicious thick LOVE… ahhh!

ONE love sent TWICE!!! I’ll be in touch again in the New Year… Rest up! PERFECT PEACE TO ALL!

P.S. Thanks honey for filling my visual gaps with your divine artwork… you’re totally RAD!

What more can I say….

“We live in a world where we have to hide to make love, while violence is practiced in broad daylight.” ― John Lennon

ONE

I am in a place of understanding and submerging myself in ‘ONENESS’. All beauty is an expression of US. We are not separate from the multicoloured array of exquisiteness, the clever designs and the witty words… instead we are the mirror reflecting our sameness to each other. “I SEE YOU”… from the wisdom of hollywood’s Avatar!

Tree in a bag

yuken teruya

One artist is transforming paper bags into miniature artworks of brilliance. The bags produced for the Olympics from fast food giant, McDonald has inspired artist Yuken Teruya to repackage our perception on the every day ordinary into exquisite beauty. In his latest work called “Notice-Forest: What victory tastes like/london”, he uses nothing but the bag and glue to resurrect the origins of it’s source back to life. The tree. In the center of each bag, Teruyas has delicately sculpted a tree. The question here is: Does the bag support the tree or does the strength of the tree support the bag? Included in this post are some of his earlier works where he has used upmarket department store bags. Absolutely gorgeous!

His work is currently showing at the 18th Biennale of Sydney til 16 September 2012.
